Wu Guichen, styled Feiqing and Xianglun, was also known by her literary name "Xiaoxian" (Fairy at Dawn). She was a native of Jintan, daughter of Wu Langzhai and wife of Gu He. From childhood, she learned Yun ShoupingĄ¯s boneless flower-and-bird painting technique from Pan Yijun, a painter and successful candidate in the highest examination. Her painting skills became mature day by day. She often sketched flowers from nature. Her graceful paintings are so lifelike that branches of flowers seem to be swaying in the breeze and dews seem to be on their leaves.
