Fan Jue,styled Shuangyu (Double Jades), was a native of Qingxi. Although she was a courtesan, her noble characters and superb painting skills won praise of her contemporaries. She was esp. skilled in painting landscape. According to Yu Shaosong of the Qing dynasty, "she enjoyed painting landscape and copied the works of Dachi and Gu Baochuang. In her paintings vividly appear old trees, distant hills and steep ravine. As her brushwork is full of the spirit of nature, she was likened to Fan Huayuan." Generally speaking, courtesan paintings mainly painted orchid and rock. Fan Jue was the only one that was good at painting landscape and compared to Fan Kuan, a landscape master of the Song dynasty. It is a pity that the Palace Museum does not have her landscape painting in its collection.
