| Wang Duanshu who was active in the Shunzhi reign (1644-1661) of the Qing dynasty, passed away in her 80s. Styled Yuying and also known by her literary name Ying Ran Zi, she was a native of Shanyin, second daughter of Wang Jizhong and wife of Ding Rui. Intelligent and resourceful from childhood, she was noted for her learning and versatility. Emperor Shunzhi heard about her accomplishments and summoned her to teach imperial concubines and princesses in the Forbidden City. She declined. Later, she lived in seclusion in Hangzhou and other places and painted landscape to please herself. Eventually, she became a famous landscape woman painter in the early Qing dynasty. |
