| Huang Yuanjie(active at 1650), styled Jieling, was a native of Xiushui. Noted for simple landscape painting style, she admired the brushwork charm of Ni Zan and Dong Qichang. Her works are characterized by slender but forceful lines, various ink shades and light umber wash. In her paintings, scenery is sparse and open and vacant pavilion is often located in luxuriant grove. The tranquil paintings are permeated with carefree literati mood. Suffering many a setback during her life, she once sold her landscape paintings to seek a livelihood, thus becoming the forerunner among those boudoir painters who depended on their painting skills to make a living in society |
