Acquisition of Paintings and Calligraphy in the Past Decade

During the ten years from 1994 to 2004, some seven-hundred paintings, calligraphy, and stone rubbings were acquired for the Palace Museum collection. Some were generous donations or were offered at favorably low prices and some were acquired in the art market at extremely high cost, all in an attempt to gather the treasures which had been lost from the imperial collection. All these artifacts have both artistic and historical value, which are instrumental for the preservation of traditional culture and for art historical research.
In showing these selected works of art from the past decade of acquisitions, we extend our sincere appreciation to the public from whom we have gained great support. We will spare no effort to continue to enrich and enhance the Palace Museum collections.

Answer: In accord with current exhibition and academic needs, the Palace Museum is interested in the following categories:
1. Works of art that were lost from the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) imperial collection, or
2. Works of art that exemplify the development of dynastic culture, or
3. Authentic works of art and artifacts that have artistic, historical, and scientific value, or
4. Modern works of art that have high artistic value.

Answer: The Palace Museum will grant each donor a certificate and engrave the donor's name on the list in the Palace of Great Benevolence (Jingren gong) so that all visitors seeing the board can admire. When a donation is chosen for an exhibition, the name of the donor will be clearly indicated. For a group of artifacts, the Palace Museum will be glad to mount an exhibition in recognition of the gift. In addition, donors' names will be posted on the list of "Virtue and Merit" on the Palace Museum’s website www.dpm.org.cn.
